Time For Some Iron Kingdoms RPG!

Yes as promised two weeks ago here I am to talk about the new Iron Kingdom RPG coming out this summer. So let’s just jump right in and get this show on the row.

First let me say that I’m stupidly excited that Privateer Press decided to finally get around to releasing a new version of IKRPG, and I can’t wait until the book gets released(considering I finally have a legit job again and can afford it). Iron Kingdoms is such a fun setting with so much going on and so many options for what one can do, and to get the chance to be a part of that world again will be great. There’s so many options with the Iron Kingdoms for adventures in the RPG; you can have a party of rebels in Llael resistance, you can side with a nation and take part in covert actions against your kingdom’s enemies, you can just be a band of roving mercenaries out to make a buck, play as pirates, and so on and so forth.

More importantly from a setting perspective it won’t feel like the other fantasy RPGs on the market, since it’s not trying to just blatantly copy and paste Middle Earth. I won’t have to worry about every Dwarf just being a carbon copy of Gimli, the Elves will all be sociopaths, there won’t be any Orcs and the villains(namely Cryx and Everblight) will seem like real threats. It’ll be such a refreshing change of pace for a fantasy setting, and I’m greatly looking forward to it.

To give you a brief idea of what’s up here’s a video from Privateer Press discussing the new IKRPG.

Now if there’s one thing I’m not so on board with is that this game seems like it’s going to rely very heavily on miniatures to get things done, and I’m a bit on the fence about that. Maybe there will be an option to not use miniatures, and if so then great. I get that a decent part of their profit will come from the miniature sales, but I still wonder how they plan to handle it. The last round of IKRPG models they made were all named characters from the books, but do they plan to offer generic character models for players? Perhaps plastic kits with multiple options so players can make a model that represents their character accurately? I’m just concerned on how they’ll handle it, and a bit curious to see where they plan to go with it.

I’m excited for the game, don’t get me wrong, but I’m still going to be on my guard. I want the IKRPG to do well and I really hope I will have a fun time playing it(I already have my first character in mind), but I’ve been burned by games before so I’m naturally hesitant. Who knows, maybe it’ll be the game I’ve always wanted.

All I know for sure is that I’m looking forward to this summer.
